Leadership

Leadership straddles the easy stuff. On one side, you can be the tough guy. You can tell your team to buck up, to deal with it. On the other side, you can give in and concede against your beliefs.

Leaders have to be the moral compass and do so in a way that inspires. It's not easy because it's not a black and white situation usually. It's quite lonely sometimes.

And the other thing about being a leader? You can't expect to get positive feedback for doing the right thing. Often, it takes a lot longer than you think. But that's why it's called leadership.

  1. Hi Barry, I never realized how lonely leadership is until a promotion I earned in January. Since then, I've had to try to find my voice as a manager. At first, I was worried about alienating my colleagues because I went from being their equal to the team leader. I think I've found a middle ground, but it's still a work in progress. What is your managing style at your Fort Wayne company? Do you have any advice for me as I continue to make this transition? Thank you!

  2. Whether it's in Fort Wayne or NYC, I think leaders should be themselves and to try their best to be honest and transparent even in the toughest moments. My advice is to face the tough things quickly and honestly. More often, that will reduce stress and improve your performance.
